Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Team to Face India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad after being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Recent performances suggest of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.
Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
