The national team terminated world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by achieving a 93-run victory in an entertaining and closely contested first Test in Lahore.

The Proteas, who had a 10-match unbeaten run in the longest format culminated in a win against the Aussies in the WTC final in June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Starting the day on 51 for two, they lost century-maker Tony de Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the tightly balanced run chase in the home team's favour.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who took 10-191 in the match, removed Tristan Stubbs for two and clean bowled Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid also capitalized on sharp turn to end opener Ryan Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 deliveries for 45 - and Shaheen came back in the post-lunch session to dismiss the lower order with a fine display of reverse swing.

He trapped Verreynne leg before for nineteen and dismissed Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to seal the victory.

It was each team's first match of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle and propels the hosts directly into the number two spot behind table-toppers the Australian team.

The win was built around key performances of ninety-three by opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, all-rounder Salman Agha which boosted them to 378.

After that slow bowlers Noman and Sajid utilized favourable home conditions, as they had in their series victory over England last year, to maintain their lead.

The next and last match starts on 20 October.
